Seven years ago in Emmerdale, Chas Dingle and partner Paddy were devastated when their newborn baby daughter Grace died just 29 minutes after her birth.

Having been told their baby’s prognosis during the pregnancy, nothing could prepare Chas and Paddy for the reality of having to say goodbye to Grace.

As the family remembers her on what would have been her seventh birthday, here’s what happened to baby Grace.

Who were Grace’s parents in Emmerdale?

Grace was the late daughter of Chas Dingle and Paddy Kirk. Paddy first became attracted to Chas in 2008 while she was working as a receptionist at his vets.

After chasing Chas for a while and even allowing her and her son Aaron Dingle to move in with him, he finally declared his feelings. Chas initially said she wanted them to just be friends, but in 2009 they started dating.

It was short-lived though as Chas cheated on Paddy with Carl King. The two were apart for a while, before reuniting towards the end of 2017, with Chas quickly falling pregnant.

The couple also have another daughter, Eve, who was born in October 2019. While, Chas’s eldest child – and Grace and Eve’s half brother – Aaron still sees Paddy as a father figure.

Pregnancy and diagnosis

Chas discovered she was pregnant in February 2018 after forgetting to get her contraceptive injection. With her and Paddy only recently reunited, Chas initially intended to have an abortion. However, she couldn’t go through with it.

Paddy and Chas soon became excited about their impending arrival and nicknamed their baby Margarita. But due to a mix up with the dates, Chas ended up attending the 20 week scan on her own.

Chas was thrilled to learn she was having a girl. But the joy soon turned to despair when the sonographer noticed something concerning on the scan.

A doctor diagnosed Chas and Paddy’s unborn baby with Bilateral Renal Agenesis, which comes when both kidneys and bladder fail to develop.

Chas was told that their baby daughter would not survive, but she kept the devastating news to herself at first. Paddy discovered the truth when Chas broke down in the newly decorated nursery. She finally told him about their daughter’s prognosis.

The couple sought a second opinion, before agreeing to a termination. But Chas was still hopeful for a miracle, and when she felt her daughter kick, she realised she couldn’t go through with the termination.

Grace’s birth and death

Prior to Grace’s birth, Chas and Paddy settled on the name Grace and asked Marlon and Liv to be godparents. They also agreed to donate Grace’s organs.

Chas went into labour on the day of Aaron and Robert’s stag do, before giving birth at Hotten General Hospital. In an emotionally charged episode, Chas and Paddy began imagining what Grace’s life would have looked like if she’d survived.

We saw images of Grace riding her bike and being shown the carving in the tree, which Chas and Paddy had done before Grace was born. We also saw Paddy changing up the words to the song Wheels on the Bus and embarrassing Grace in the process.

Grace passed away on October 1m 2018 after just 29 minutes, while Chas held her in her arms as her and Paddy said goodbye.

Her funeral took place on October 25 and she’s buried next to her aunt Gennie Walker in the Emmerdale Cemetery.

Grace is frequently remembered and mentioned in Emmerdale, with both Paddy and Chas regularly visiting their daughter’s grave.
