ITV Share By Carena Crawford Oct 22 2025 By Carena Crawford Oct 22 2025 Give Kev a chance - Robron fans need to ease up, Kev is a breath of fresh air in Emmerdale - OPINION Kev is hilarous Features Kev Townsend Robron Share By Carena Crawford Oct 22 2025 By Carena Crawford Oct 22 2025 Kev Townsend arrived in Emmerdale with quite the secret: he is Robert Sugden’s secret husband from prison. Of course, the twist left die-hard Robron fans furious. Just as we’d got rid of evil John Sugden and Robert and Aaron Dingle had got back together here comes another husband-shaped problem to split them up. It has led to quite an unfair round of Kev-bashing. Behind the Robron drama, Kev is actually an interesting and complex character. And an actor of Chris Coghill’s abilities has a lot to give the soap. I think it’s time to lay off him and give Kev a chance. Kev might not be liked, but he is compelling to watch (Credit: ITV) Plenty of Emmerdale fans do like Kev I’m not the only one. There are lots of viewers on social media who feel the same. article continues below Read all the latest spoilers “Kev is a great character for sure. And Chris is such a good actor,” wrote one on X. Another, watching Tuesday night’s outing added: “Kev saving the episode already.” “I quite like Kev. Aside from his scary side, he is hilarious!! Interesting how Kev and Robert got together! The actor himself is playing Kev brilliantly!” shared a third. A fourth expressed: “Kev is a much better and more interesting character than John.” And after his outpouring of emotion during Wednesday night’s episode (October 22) another wrote: “Controversial opinion, I think Kev is a great character and I feel bad for him ngl.” Others could see why people didn’t like him, but also urged them to give Kev a chance. “So why do people hate Kev? One word: Robron. Anyone that comes between the beloved boys is a no from fans,” sighed one. He brings humour to the show too (Credit: ITV) Why we need to give Kev a chance Don’t get me wrong, I love Robron together. I want nothing more than Robert and Aaron to be reunited, get Seb back and live happily ever after. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Kev is a good character. Imagine if he was coming between Joe and Dawn – would we be so angry about him then? No (and arguably we’d all be less interested in that anyway!) He’s been brought in to cause a stir and no one for one second can say he hasn’t done that! Chris Coghill is playing him to perfection. He lights up the screen when he’s on it. Everything from the weird hand gestures, the sniffing and strange way he talks from fast to slow to fast again show us that he is building a character with more layers than an onion. He’s got roughly five months to live and I can’t wait to peel back each layer and see what’s really underneath. Plus, he’s hilarious! Chris and Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert, have also told us Kev isn’t just a violent thug. “Kev is a really complex character and there’s so much to him,” Ryan explained to Emmerdale Insider recently. “He’s not just some baddie. He’s not even a baddie…” ” Chris agreed: “He’s a criminal and he’s got psychopathic tendencies but he’s got a lot of redeeming qualities.” We didn’t want another John Sugden and we’ve not got one (Credit: ITV) He’s not just another John Sugden I think it’s fair to say we were all more than fed-up with John by the end (if that even was the end!). Skulking around in plain sight, no one noticing anything was up with him for ages and getting away with everything. But Kev is different. We already know his bad qualities. We already know Robert is scared of him. And we definitely have more to learn when Robert’s standalone episode airs next month. It doesn’t matter that he’s not a nice guy (we loved Meena Jutla and she wasn’t exactly nice, was she?!) Soap characters aren’t all meant to be nice, we’re not meant to like them all, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be gripping to watch. And it really doesn’t matter that he’s coming between Robert and Aaron at this point. Fans have wanted a Robron reunion for SO LONG, do you really think Emmerdale won’t give us one at the end of the day? Kev is just another stumbling block – and a really interesting and compelling one at that. So while he’s with us, like him or not, let’s give him a chance to entertain us at the very least.
