We need to know.

In Emmerdale tonight, Cain confronted John Sugden and a gun was fired. But who has been shot and will they survive?

Previously, fugitive John had approached Caleb and attempted to use blackmail over Anthony’s death in order to get Caleb to help him flee the country.

Caleb agreed to John’s demands, but tonight it was revealed that Caleb had tricked John and sent him right into the clutches of Cain.

Caleb tricked John in Emmerdale tonight

At the depot, Caleb Miligan switched off the CCTV and texted John telling him to get in the truck. The van soon stopped in the middle of nowhere, with John pointing out that he couldn’t hear any noise. When John stepped out of the back of the truck, he was confronted by Caleb pointing a shotgun at him.

But if John thought it was just Caleb he had to deal with, he was wrong. In a twist he didn’t see coming, Caleb told John: “I think there’s been some kind of misunderstanding. See, I’m not the one who’s gonna put a bullet in your brain.” John then turned around to see Cain approaching.

Cain took the gun and ordered John to move further into the woods. A now panicked John attempted to apologise to Cain over Nate’s death. He insisted he’d done everything he could to save Nate’s life – but Cain was having none of it.

Cain was furious as he told John: “You killed him. And then you wormed your way into my family. You made everyone think that he’d abandoned us. And then you even turned up at his funeral, carried his coffin. You said Tracy’s words, and then you watched me put my son in the ground. You’re sick!”

When Cain called John an “insignificant, lonely, tragic little man”, John hit back by telling Cain that Nate hated him and winding him up about Nate sleeping with Moira.

John threatened Cain and Caleb

Caleb soon joined Cain and John in the woods. After Cain forced John into a hole he’d dug, John played he trump card and told the brothers that he has scheduled an email to be sent to the police detailing everything that happened to Anthony. John told them that if he is not alive to stop it then it’ll be sent first thing tomorrow morning. “Your whole family will be sent down for this. Ruby will go down for murder. The only way to save her and your family is to let me go.”

Cain was sure he was lying, but a cautious Caleb said: “What if he’s not?” Caleb also warned Cain that he could go to prison if he kills John.

Seeing sense, Cain told John: “Every part of me wants to kill you, but I’m not going to because I’m not you.” He then said he’d be happy to see John behind bars for the rest of his life.

However, John quickly pointed out that prison was not part of the deal – he wants freedom. He claimed that if he gets arrested, the email will be sent. Cain continued to think John was bluffing – believing that John really does love Aaron and wouldn’t risk Aaron being sent down.

Who was shot in Emmerdale?

As Cain and Caleb argued over what to do, John reached for a rock (again!). He was about to hit Cain with it when Cain suddenly turned and pointed the gun at him. “That is the last mistake you’re ever gonna make,” an angry Cain told John.

The camera then panned out to the outside of the woods as a gunshot was heard. Now, fans are desperate to know if John is dead.

“Will Johnny boy be Cain’s first kill?? I really didn’t want John to have the easy way out, i wanted him to suffer in prison and one final showdown with the village considering he affected all of them in some way,” wrote one viewer on X.

A second fan said: “Cain killing John would actually be one of the best shocks in soap history imo.” While a third fan added: “Torn between wanting Cain to have actually finished John off and wanting John to survive this encounter so that he’ll finally be made to serve the prison sentence he deserves, ahhhhhh.”

Others fans are sure that John is not dead, with a fourth viewer writing: “John is clearly not dead.”

But if John didn’t get shot, who did?

What else happened in Emmerdale tonight?

While Emmerdale tonight was very Caleb, Cain and John focused, we did see a fair bit of Aaron as the bond between him and Ruby was revisited.

In emotional scenes, Ruby told Aaron that she was would always be there for him. Here's what else happened in Emmerdale tonight.

Caleb lied to Ruby and Jai

In order to enact his John plan, Caleb had to lie to his wife and colleague. Ruby caught him trying to sneak out of the house. He told her he had to take an overnight work trip to Rotterdam.

At the Depot, in order to get him out the way, Caleb sent Jai to Leeds for a meeting. He pretended he was sending Jai as Jai had asked for more responsibility.

Jai almost caught John, as he returned to the Depot shortly after due to Caleb not having given him the name of the person he was supposed to be meeting. Caleb quickly gave the name Gary Glynn and sent Jai on his way. He later lied to Ruby again, when she called him, claiming that he had just stepped out of the van for some air.

Chas was worried about Aaron

Chas visited Caleb and Ruby after the police wouldn't let her into Aaron's place to pick up some bits.

Caleb shared that he'd seen Cain, with Chas responding: "Saw him? Or heard him shouting his mouth off?" While Chas said she understands why he's in a bad way, she pointed out that Aaron is a mess too and doesn't need his uncle making everything worse.

After Caleb left, Chas admitted to Ruby that Aaron is scared. She confessed she is worried too – especially about John potentially coming back. Ruby looked thoughtful as Chas said Aaron has all these thoughts going round his head and there is nothing she can do to make it better.

Ruby supported Aaron

Following Chas's words, Ruby decided to head to the hospital. Having previously bonded over their shared abuse trauma, Ruby figured Aaron might listen to her.

She joked about hospitals not serving wine before getting into the deep stuff. Aaron was quick to open up to Ruby, telling her he can't believe he let someone hurt him again.

Aaron said there were lots of red flags and Mack and Robert kept telling him there was something wrong with John, but he "just didn't wanna hear it".

Ruby pointed out that guys like John are clever, they are good at making the victim think it's their fault. She tried her best to reassure Aaron. She praised him for getting through so much tough stuff in his life.

There was an emotional moment as a tearful Ruby told Aaron that he was there for her during the Anthony stuff and she will always be there for him too.
