Emmerdale fans unhappy with 'jarring' and 'rushed' episode as Mackenzie was rescued

Could April and Dylan have waited until next week?

Emmerdale last night saw Mackenzie Boyd rescued and John Sugden disappear as the truth about all his crimes came tumbling out.

But for some fans it wasn’t quite the episode they had hoped for. Intertwined with April and Dylan stories, plus Bernice’s exit, it felt the emphasis wasn’t where it should be.

Emmerdale last night

The hunt was on for Mack last night (Thursday September 18) after Aaron woke from his coma and revealed John was holding him hostage in an underground bunker.

As the police and Charity combed the woods, they eventually found the bunker. But Mack wasn’t in it.

Instead, viewers saw Mack being dropped off at the hospital by John, who had clearly decided to act the hero again.

The next thing we saw, Moira was on the phone to Charity crying that Mackenzie was there and had multiple injuries. We did not see how Moira found out, we didn’t see Mack rushed in in a bad way. We saw nothing.

And then we didn’t see John again at all.

Elsewhere, Aaron told Charity everything else that John had done, including drugging her and killing Nate. But we didn’t see her reaction to it, we just heard from her that she knew.

Fans call John reveal in Emmerdale ‘rushed’

Some watching at home were not happy with the way things played out on screen. Although many rightly praised the performances of all the actors involved.

They took to a Reddit forum to air their views.

“After all the months of build-up especially this last couple of weeks I think they got tonight’s episode wrong,” one said. They continued: “I think it should have been totally about the coming together of the storyline and all the rest with April, Dylan, Bernice, Marlon etc should have been left as fillers next week.

“The John storyline felt too rushed. To all the Dingles, Paddy and Vic ,the revelation of this all being down to John should have been HUGE! They reacted as though it was a minor thing and showed very little reaction.

“The part where Mack got taken to hospital and seconds later Moira and Chas already knew was rubbish. I wish we had seen them actually finding out… Just a bit disappointed.”

‘Not great storytelling’ say Emmerdale fans

Others agreed: “There should have been a scene of them wheeling Mack past Moira. It was so jarring to see John drop him off, which is a whole separate discussion, and then they skip to Moira already crying at the state of him. Like they weren’t even on screen together she had to tell us that she had seen him already which isn’t great storytelling.”

Someone else added: “I found the lack of continuity jarring and frustrating—just as they build up to a climax or a big reveal, cut to April or Rodney. Too jarring and distracting in what should have been 44 mins straight of action and reactions to what we’ve all waited for.”

“I couldn’t have said it better myself,” Agreed another. “This episode would be a million times better if they had just included a couple more reactions. Mainly, Moira finding out Mack was in hospital, but also Aaron telling Chas about everything.

“And Charity/Moira actually finding out about John having Mack, not just them already knowing at the beginning of the episode. And it would be nice to see some more remorseful reactions towards Robert as well.”
