ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider Share By Carena Crawford Sep 19 2025 By Carena Crawford Sep 19 2025 All the plot holes from the John Sugden climax including super strength, clean jeans and dreadful police We loved the week - even if none of it made sense! Features John Sugden Mackenzie Boyd Share By Carena Crawford Sep 19 2025 By Carena Crawford Sep 19 2025 It’s been another cracking week of Emmerdale as the John Sugden saga took more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. In fact at times we felt almost as if we’d been on a rollercoaster. But it seems Emmerdale aren’t ready for us to get off just yet as the story is set to continue into a least next week. And as we begin to question exactly where John Sugden is now, it got us thinking just how stupid the Emmerdale police force really are. And that got us thinking about all the other plot holes we’ve noticed this week. Don’t get us wrong, it’s been an epic week of high stakes drama and we’ve loved every minute. Well, almost every minute… We can see you, John (Credit: ITV) John Sugden lives to tell another tale in Emmerdale Yep, you read that right, John Sugden still hasn’t been caught out. Tonight (Friday September 19) saw Mackenzie recount exactly what had happened to him in the bunker. article continues below Read all the latest spoilers John has been holding him there hostage for weeks. But yesterday, as the truth came crashing out, John had a change of heart about leaving Mack to die and took him to the hospital. He didn’t stick around though, he just dumped him and ran. It was touch and go as Mack had a broken shoulder, smashed ankle, severe dehydration, malnutrition and had ben pumped full of a concoction of drugs. But at the end of the ep, Mack woke up and was going to be okay. Tonight he told the truth about everything John had told him to the police, to Charity and to Cain. Cain who is looking to place blame firmly on Aaron’s shoulders for not knowing who he had married. It seemed Mack even felt a bit sorry for John and sort of understood his motives. Meanwhile, Robert was released from prison, but no one was that pleased to see him. Chas gave him short shrift and told him to stay away from Aaron and Aaron was equally as unimpressed when Robert went to visit him. Charming, he only saved your life! As all of this was going on, John was lurking in the village, hiding behind a very thin post and yet still no one could see him! Plot holes in the John Sugden saga in Emmerdale And that’s just one of many strange things that have been pointed out over the course of this week… Frank Laverty as DS Jordan in Emmerdale (Credit: ITV) 1. How are the Emmerdale police so bad? It’s sort of a running joke now in the Dales, all except DS Foy seem to be particularly incompetent at their jobs. They’re all over the cottage and the village yet they can’t seem to find one guy (who is hiding behind something the size of a bean pole). Not to mention the fact no one stayed to take Aaron’s full statement before they rushed off to find Mack. And the detective just said: “Get a team up to the cottage.” What cottage? How does the person on the other end know whose cottage he meant – could have been instructing them to go to his own cottage and clean it up for all they knew! As one put it on Reddit: “Police detective with an army of policeman, all of them there based on what Aaron says. Instead of one stays put with Aaron taking full declaration, one goes to fetch Robert to get his full picture.” Someone else took issue with Charity at the police search: “Predictable for plot reasons, but clearly Charity should not be participating in the police search in that way and the way she was two steps behind the police line was pure panto. She’s behind you!” John carries Mackenzie despite his own injuries (Credit: ITV) 2. John’s super recovery Again, we know from past history Hotten General is a miracle worker. That is THE hospital you want to go to if you are near death as you’ll be out in hours. Case in point, John Sugden. Having taken a plunge over a cliff, he was up and out of bed pretty fast. And then he was able to use his super-human strength to pick Mack up and carry him to hospital. Riiiiiight. “Super-John carrying Mackenzie. John absolutely should NOT be sufficiently recovered from the injuries he sustained when he fell to be carrying another person around!” said one fan. “I know you love to write villains making a miracle recovery but this is not even remotely believable! You are not writing a superhero movie! Get a clue!” Another added: “John needed to get Mack UP out of the bunker and then of course is shown carrying him like a sack of potatoes. Yet in other scenes previously, John is barely able to walk.” 3. Mack’s clean jeans It’s been a point of discussion for weeks as to how Mackenzie was using the toilet. But seriously, how were his jeans so clean? He’s been chained on a bed alone for ages! “Mack’s jeans are still pretty clean…presuming the poor lad has been toileting on himself?” asked one fan. Another replied: “To be fair, they are at least ripped near the ankle. Some wear and tear.” But no soiling, eh? Moira was beside herself that her brother was in a bad way (Credit: ITV) 4. How did they identify Mack after John Sugden dropped him off in Emmerdale? John’s super-strength saw him carry Mack to the hospital, reveal he had taken an overdose and then rush off. He didn’t give a name or anything else, so how did the medics know to notify Moira? Did she see him whizz past in a wheelchair? How did Chas know he was there too – all before his wife, Charity, did? Either Emmerdale missed a whole chunk – of quite vital – plot, or we blinked for a second and it whizzed by like Mack in the wheelchair! One viewer commented: “John didn’t give them an ID and Mack certainly wasn’t able to convey who he was??? One assumes someone ID’d him in passing as he was being wheeled in to the hospital but I just cannot fathom that they omitted it??” Did you notice anything else that didn’t add up?
